Warning - don't eat Poppy seeds if you're going to Deliver soon!

I just saw a horrible news item about two mothers that had their baby's taken away from them because they failed a routine drug test when they were in hospital to deliver.  It turns out one of them had eaten a chicken salad with poppy seed dressing, and the other a poppy seed bagel prior to delivery.  One of the mothers only got her child returned after something like 76 DAYS.  I can't imagine something so horrendous and stupid as this happening.  I wanted to know - were they informed that they were being drug tested - and who paid for it?  Will they test me without my knowledge?  It just makes me even more scared of going into hospital.

  1. That's nuts. Try not to drive yourself nuts worrying you might do something wrong. I'm sure these were isolated cases, and good point about who paid for the tests. Who ordered them too?

  2. Holy cow! I don't particularly like them so I won't be seeking them out but they can be on top of a bagel for pete's sake. I don't think that's going to get anyone loopy.

  3. that's crazy. Do you have any background info on the mothers? I would imagine that these are isolated cases, and perhaps there was reason to test the mothers. There has been some stories in the past couple of years about people failing drug tests at the office after eating poppy seeds, so it wouldn't be the first time that someone got caught with that. Based on that, I would imagine that maybe the mothers weren't the most stand up people to begin with and are blaming it on poppy seeds... who knows.

Ask lots of questions, find out if they are drug testing first. And stop worrying, I'm sure that you have nothing to worry about... and apparently stay away from the poppy seeds.

  4. Actually, one of the mothers I know nothing of her background (but she looked very nice), the other had absolutely No drug history and an older child at home who had been perfectly taken care of. I was glad to hear that this mother had a lawyer who was suing for some Huge amount of money - not that any amount could replace the heartache of having your child stolen from you for 67 days!
